The anti-GST coalition will be holding seven events throughout Peninsula Malaysia to rally the public to attend the group's Labour Day rally in Kuala Lumpur.

The roadshow will take the group through Alor Setar, Bagan Serai, Seremban, Kemaman, Batu Pahat, Tumpat and Shah Alam.

"We have only one demand: GST must be scrapped immediately," said the group, known as #BantahGST, in a press release today.

The coalition had resolved on March 29 that the GST was a "cruel" form of taxation and that Putrajaya did not take public opinion and interest into account.

"The situation is exacerbated by the fact that the country's leaders are providing mere superficial analysis and explanations to justify this 'twisted' policy.

"To make matters worse, this tax was introduced at a time when the country is facing the 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) scandal, which is the biggest financial scandal in the country's history," said the group.

The #BantahGST coalition comprise NGOs, civil society movements and opposition parties.

Meanwhile, a group of opposition MPs announced an online petition campaign to oppose GST, also called #BantahGST.

It aims to collect one million signatures urging Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak to scrap the tax.

“We are targeting 200,000 objections by May 1, then gradually reach one million. If the people’s voice is the strong, then the people are in charge,” said Bukit Mertajam MP Steven Sim at a press conference the parliament building today.
