The High Court in  Kuala Lumpur today reversed the acquittal of 11 protesters for illegal assembly at the first Bersih rally in 2007.

The 11 were initially cleared by a sessions court in Kuala Lumpur in November 2010.

However, the High Court upheld the acquittal of Batu MP Tian Chua ( right ) and PAS deputy president Mohamad Sabu.

The 11 were charged under Section 143 of the Penal Code, which is on being a member of an illegal assembly and Section 145 of the same law for refusal to disperse from an illegal assembly.

The court upheld the second charge and fined each of them RM,8000, or two months' jail in default, for refusing to obey police orders to disperse during the rally.

The decision was delivered by High Court judge Amelia Tee Hong Geok Abdullah, the New Straits Times reported.

The 11 are Mohd Zad Abdullah, Mohd Salim Yeslam, Ahmad Razali Abd Rahman, Razali Abdul, Azahar Yusop, Sulaiman Ahmad, Taib Abdullah, Mohd Shafie Ismail, Mohamad Nazreen Mohd Nasir, Mohd Abi Salam Ariffin and Ishak Othman.
