The PAS president's office has denied that Abdul Hadi Awang supports the Special Measures Against Terrorism in Foreign Countries Bill 2015 passed this week.

Bernama yesterday reported him supporting the new law, which was passed with other anti-terrorist legislations, dubbed by critics including PAS' Pakatan Rakyat coalition partners as a fortified revival of the draconian Internal Security Act (ISA).

However, Hadi's office in a statement today said the content of the news report is "inaccurate and antithetical to the actual statement by the PAS president".

"The article titled 'PAS supports government effort to combat terrorism through Pota' is a far cry from the essence of what was said by the PAS president," said Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar, Hadi's political secretary.

The controversial legislation, blasted by human rights proponents and criticised by the UN Human Rights Commissioner, was passed by Parliament at 2.25am on April 7.

Ahmad Samsuri said Hadi agreed that combatting terrorism is needed and is promoted in Islam.

However, the Marang MP opposed the government policy "from a technical legal standpoint and has had lengthy debates on this".

"With this clarification, the office of the PAS president hopes that the false and incorrect news report will no longer confuse PAS supporters and proponents throughout the country."

Ahmad Samsuri also said a recording of Hadi's statement at the press conference will be uploaded online to enable people to verify what he said.
