Gerakan is looking to its Teluk Intan victory for inspiration in the coming Permatang Pauh polls on May 7 in which PKR will start as favourites.

Last May Gerakan president Mah Siew Keong won the Teluk Intan seat with a wafer-thin majority of 238 votes against DAP's Dyana Sofya Mohd Daud.

"We have got feedback from members and voters and we are confident that BN’s performance can be better this time," Mah said when met in Permatang Pauh today.

"We should not give up and have the same fighting spirit shown when we won the Teluk Intan by-election," he added.

Opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim ( left ) had won the Permatang Pauh parliamentary seat by a majority of over 11,000 votes in May 2013 general election but had to surrender it as he is now in jail for sodomy.

Mah disclosed that Gerakan will go down to the ground and meet voters face to face to explain current issues like the implementation of the goods and services tax which directly affects the people.

"Having big dinners does not work anymore. We will go house to house to explain issues. We have time to do it," he said.

Mah, who is also a minister in the Prime Minister's Department, said Gerakan has 3,000 members in Permatang Pauh.

They have already started spreading the message to give BN a chance this time around, he added.

He said PKR president and Kajang assemblywoman Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, who is Anwar’s wife, may be the party's candidate for Permatang Pauh.

But he pointed out she is already serving Kajang as a state assemblyperson and questioned how well she could serve Permatang Pauh, which is a six-hour drive away.

Anwar had held the seat since 1982, before he was sacked from his deputy prime minister's post in 1998.

Wan Azizah then took over from 1999 to 2008 when Anwar was serving a six year jail sentence for abuse of power related to his first sodomy charge.

He was freed in 2004 but was disqualified from standing for election for another four years. In 2008 she stepped down to pave his return to Parliament.

Nomination day for the seat will be on April 25 and early voting starts on May 3.
