Broadband internet tariffs will go down by up to 57 percent in the next two months, Communications and Multimedia Minister Ahmad Shabery Cheek said.

Rates will be lower for both mobile and internet broadband, after telecommunications companies agreed to cut rates, he said.

This means mobile packages with a monthly data cap of 1GB and at least 3G-HSPA for both prepaid and postage packages will cost RM25 -  a 14 percent cut.

Basic fixed line broadband services by Telekom Malaysia will be offered at RM38 a month for 1Mbps.

This is 57 percent lower than the current price of RM88 for the basic package and will start June 2015.

"This is very encouraging for consumers and I thank the communications providers for coming up with these value-for-money packages.

"It is important that all groups are able to get into the digital mainstream and participate in the digital and Internet economies," added Shabery.

He said the rate cuts will also compensate for the extra six percent levied for goods and services tax.

To a question, he added the ministry is also mindful of the need to improve quality.
