Zairil: DAP not in Egypt to woo Malay students
DAP rubbished claims it is making rounds in Egypt to recruit the Malay students there, in a bid to grow its Malay membership.
This comes after NGO Ikatan Muslimin Malaysia (Isma)’s mouthpiece Ismaweb yesterday published an editorial alleging that DAP is now in Egypt to prey on Malay students there.
DAP rubbished claims it is making rounds in Egypt to recruit the Malay students there, in a bid to grow its Malay membership.
This comes after NGO Ikatan Muslimin Malaysia's (Isma) mouthpiece Ismaweb yesterday published an editorial alleging that DAP is now in Egypt to prey on Malay students there.
Deputy publicity secretary Zairil Khir Johari ( left ) said the visit from April 13 to 19 is to understand the dynamics of West Asian politics and visit political and research organisations there.
"The Facebook account ‘DAP Mesir’ (Egypt DAP) and other similar pages have nothing to do with DAP and seem to have a malicious objective of smearing our West Asia visit," Zairil said in a statement.
In his editorial, Ismaweb editor Mohd Firdaus Salleh Hudin alleged that DAP has its eyes on Malay students studying in Egypt to add ustaz with Middle East credentials to its ranks.
"I should not be shocked because DAP has already hypnotised and used Malay youths who have lost their principles to join in the fight against Malays and Muslims.
“We all know DAP’s latest strategy to make use of young Malays in their campaigns.
"It already has Rara and Dyana Sofya (in dark green raincoats in picture, right) , so they now want their own ustaz and ustazah who graduate from Middle Eastern universities who can issue confusing views and fatwa for their own evil agenda," Mohd Firdaus wrote.
He was referring to DAP members Young Syefura Othman and Dyana Sofya Mohd Daud.
Young Syefura, an activist who shot to social media fame when a picture of her at the Bersih 3 rally went viral, was featured in an article in Roketkini, while Dyana Sofya was DAP's Teluk Intan by-election candidate.
Roketkini is the Bahasa Malaysia edition of The Rocket , and is seen as part of the party's outreach to communities outside of its traditional Chinese target group. DAP is a majority Chinese party.

A DAP Mesir Facebook posting appended by Mohd Firdaus in his editorial states that DAP leaders are visiting Egypt and Jordan to visit students there.
“We believe this shows that we have broken the wall put up by (Malaysian) students in Egypt,” the post reads.
However, Zairil said although there were meetings with Malaysian students in Jordan, the study tour mostly consisted of visits to various NGO and think tanks.
The tour also visited a United Nations-operated Syrian refugee camp in Mafraq, which is home to more that 80,000 refugees.
Among members of the delegation include Gelang Patah MP Lim Kit Siang, Seputeh MP Teresa Kok, Kluang MP Liew Chin Tong, Bukit Bendera MP Zairil Khir Johari, and Bukit Mertajam MP Steven Sim.
