Muslims should adhere to decisions made at the National Fatwa Committee's meeting (muzakarah) when faced with religious rulings which have no clear 'nas' (in the Quran).

Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Jamil Khir Baharom

said this is because decisions made by the National Fatwa Committee reflected the government's stand.

"There are a lot of views out there, for example on the goods and services tax (GST). Many people give their religious rulings but since there are no clear 'nas' (supporting passanges in scripture), the decision of the National Fatwa Committee is used since they are appointed by the government."

Jamil Said this when winding up debate on the motion of thanks for the Yang di-Pertuan Agong's opening address in the Dewan Negara, today.

Yesterday, the National Fatwa Committee reiterated that the implementation of GST is 'harus' (neither discouraged nor encouraged).

Its chairman, Prof Emeritus Abdul Shukor Husin said implementation of GST should be based on six parameters outlined by the committee.

The motion of thanks for the Yang di-Pertuan Agong's opening address was then passed. The senate session continues tomorrow.
