Cops: IGP's brother did not break the law

Kangkung: Petaling Jaya district police chief Azmi Abu Kassim investigated the brother of his boss and found him not guilty. What else is new?

 

Every opposition leader and supporter who was accused with sedition was humiliated, shackled, dressed in prison uniform, made to walk barefooted, etc.

 

Of course, as the brother of the inspector-general of police (IGP), Abdullah Abu Bakar did not need to go through all that. He only needed a "tiring" three-hour "questioning" and quickly declared innocent.

 

Yes, we live a country where there are two sets of laws - one for those with Umno (including the brother of the IGP) and another for opposition leaders and supporters.

 

AJ: We knew it even before the investigation started. In fact, no one broke the law. And we also know if they do this in the future, they will not be breaking any law either.

 

Lukesky: Did anybody expect anything different here? Most people knew the investigation was the usual ‘wayang kulit’ (only for show). These guys were absolved of all wrongs even before the investigation started.

 

But to allay any concerns, the powers-that-be here will find a scapegoat to charge over this affair, but that person will be released with no further action (NFA) or a small fine after public focus has shifted to the next burning issue.

 

That is unfortunately the state of justice in Malaysia these days.

 

FairMind: If the IGP’s brother did not break the law, then who broke the law?

 

Out of the rowdy 50 people, it cannot be that none broke the law and there were no leaders or instigators. Yet the police were quick to arrest those involved in other demonstrations.

 

Anonymous_3e79: So I can go to a mosque (with a gang of 50) and demand them to take down their loudspeaker, and that's not breaking any law?

 

There should be charges on racketeering, hooliganism, and illegal assembly to start with.

 

Baiyuensheng: Did Abdullah promote ill-will? Did the protest promote hostility? Did it promote hatred among races?

 

And what criteria did the police use to determine these and decided that Abdullah did not violate any of these? Do the police understand the law that they are enforcing?

 

The problem in this country is like in China - the laws are there but subjected to selective interpretation and enforcement.

 

Daniel Matthew Bradley: I don't get it. One minute, you say he didn't break the law. Another minute, you say that the investigation is still ongoing. Which is which?

 

Ferdtan: What is this? We don’t get it. It doesn’t add up.

 

Petaling Jaya district police chief Azmi said based on current investigation, Abdullah did not violate any law at the protest.

 

According to him, the investigation has not been finalised, but why the pre-emptive statement to clear the suspect? Is that necessary?

 

It is the job of the deputy public prosecutor (DPP), not the investigating police officer, to decide whether a person should be charged. So have the police overstepped their responsibility/authority in this disclosure?

 

If the police thought that the suspect clearly had not violated any law, then they should have dismissed the whole investigation without involving the Attorney-General’s Chambers, as there was no case at all.

 

Or were the police trying to influence the DPPs in their decisions?

 

Chial: Are the police playing judge and jury? I wonder what definition the police used this time for sedition. Will it be the same definition when it comes to opposition members?

 

Malaysia Ku: PM Najib Razak said something, the home minister said another thing, the Bar Council and the inter-religious group said some other things, and the IGP said, “He ain't seditious, he's my brother."

 

Oh Ya?: Perkasa leader Ibrahim Ali was also exonerated, what more the IGP's brother? They have been power for so long that even the patriarch, Dr Mahathir Mohamad is also having difficulty extracting an explanation, so how could one expect that they will be charged?

 

Paul Warren: Our police are so good at coming to this conclusion without having gone to his house and detained him in the middle of the night, handcuffed him and got him to wear that dreaded purple colour lock-up uniform and marched him to a magistrates court for further detention.

 

From Penang: It is illogical to have the police to come out and say the IGP's brother break the law. Of course, he is innocent. He only represented the demonstrators to politely convince the church to remove its cross.

 

Besides, the act of interfering and insulting other religion is absolutely fine for the police and their boss.
