Be smart and support Mahathir, says Zaid

Former law minister Zaid Ibrahim has called on those who have reservations about Dr Mahathir Mohamad or dislike him to be "smart".

He cited Malaysiakini , saying the news portal's readers may not like the former premier.

"But he is 100 percent correct on (Prime Minister) Najib (Abdul Razak). So start being smart and support him all the way," he tweeted.

He said Najib, on the other hand, was behaving more like an emperor than a prime minister.

"PM must feel he is accountable to the rakyat. A PM does not wage war against those who have questions for him. An emperor doesn't care.

"What mandate does Najib have? The rakyat went to the polls (in) 2013 thinking they were getting a PM, little do they know they got an emperor," he tweeted.

Previously, Zaid urged Mahathir to name Umno veteran Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah instead of current number two Muhyddin Yassin as Najib’s replacement.

He said Muhyiddin would not be able to reform Umno or undo the damage inflicted by Najib.

However, PKR vice-president Rafizi Ramli called Zaid naive and pointed out that Mahathir is not interested in appointing the best man for the job.

"It is about putting someone as prime minister who can take orders and safeguard his (Mahathir's) as well as Umno's interests," he had said.

Yesterday, Zaid took a swipe at the prime minister over his speech that touched on the latter's heritage.

Vowing that he and his cabinet would not yield to attacks, Najib cited how Bugis seafarers would never raise the white flag.

"Some Malays when in distress reach out to their ethnic group for inspiration.

"Some shout out loud they are Bugis; or Minangkabau," the former law minister tweeted.
