Prime Minister Najib Razak today directed the Communication and Multimedia Minister to handle issues relating to the top-up prepaid cards.

He said only the minister concerned, namely Ahmad Shabery Cheek could make any comments on the issue.

"Shabery Cheek please take charge of the top-up issue. Starting now any announcement to the people can only be made by the KKMM minister," said Najib in his Facebook and Twitter accounts today.

Prior to this, Customs Department had directed telecommunications companies to reset the prices of telephone prepaid cards to its original prices as before the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) on April 1.

However the directive which should have been enforced today (May 1) was postponed after Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) chairperson Dr Halim Shafie made a statement that the reload of prepaid cards would continue to be imposed the GST.

Halim said price adjustments to pre-GST rate was quite impossible to implement from May 1 as requested due to the complexity of system reconfiguration.

Meanwhile Ahmad Shabery in his Twitter account said he would meet with all relevant quarters to find the best solution pertaining to the top-up prepaid card issue.

"@NajibRazak Yes Sir, I will meet with all quarters to get the best for the people and country," he said.
