PAS election committee chairperson Asmuni Awi, who has been vocal about the “dirty” election campaign for the party leadership posts, stayed silent on this today.

Asked about the coming elections by reporters present at the party’s press conference today, Asmuni merely pointed to the PAS disciplinary board.

“Ask the disciplinary board,” he said before adding he did not receive any complaint after admitting about the dirty tactics used by some of the candidates.

“After that (statement he made), I no longer received any report (about the elections). I will only comment if there are reports,” he said.

Asmuni ( left ) had previously said that the existence of dirty campaign practices in the party elections was no longer a secret.

Even so, he does not discount the possibility that smear campaigns are the work of outsiders trying to interfere in the PAS election.

“The practice of negatively labelling opponents has been around for a long time. Not only in this election, but in other elections too.

“Some individuals are labelled as liberal, opposing hudud, this and that. It happens,” Asmuni told Malaysiakini on April 16.

However, PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang has denied any dirty campaign tactics used by any faction in the party, but he he refused any further comment on the matter.

Hadi, who has been heading PAS since 2002, is the party’s first ever president to be challenged for the post in the party biennial elections that will be held next month.
