The pair involved in the Duta-Ulu Kelang Expressway (Duke) crash last Saturday were charged with causing death due to reckless driving today.

Mohd Fizal Reza Jamauddin, 31, and Siti Noor Aini Mohd Said, 35, both pleaded not guilty to the charge under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

If found guilty, the duo face jail of between two to 10 years and a fine of between RM5,000 and RM20,000.

Magistrate Noorul Fhaiez Mohd Nayan set bail at RM9,000 and suspended the duo's driving licences until the trial is concluded. Their passports were also confiscated.

Case mention has been set for June 22.

The pair were accused of causing a fatal crash on Km6.2 of the Duke Highway, resulting in the death of Fairuz Nizam Husain, 35, Nova Safitri Azhari, 25, and their daughter seven-month-old Nur Firuza Annisa.

At the time, the family was travelling home to Gombak after attending a wedding in Putrajaya.

This incident triggered a public outcry because CCTV evidence, which was uploaded online, suggested that the two cars were involved in illegal racing at the time.

It was also reported that the two cars are affiliated with the Familia Myvi Club, a car modification hobbyist collective.

Earlier, Noor Aini covered her face when she was brought to court with a red shawl.

When in court, it was noticed that she had a cut on her lip which she attempted to cover with her hand.

Mohd Fizal merely lowered his head when mobbed by the press.
