Perak royal couple make pilgrimage to royal tombs

The sixth day of the Sultan Perak XXXV enthronement ceremony today begins with the Istiadat Menziarah Makam (Pilgrimage to The Royal Tombs ceremony) of Perak’s past sultans and rulers.

Sultan of Perak Sultan Nazrin Shah and Raja Permaisuri of Perak Tuanku Zara Salim made the pilgrimage to 32 tombs of sultans, two tombs of rulers and two tombstones of Sultan Mansur Shah I after the Istiadat Tabal Adat (Customary Enthronement) and Istiadat Tabal Pusaka (Invocation of the Perak Guardian Spirits) were carried out on Wednesday and yesterday.

The location of their first visit is the Tok Temong tomb (original name Tok Perabu) in Kati in Kuala Kangsar.

Tok Temong was a woman leader who ruled Temong during the reign of Sultan Muzaffar Shah I.

Tok Temong was also the individual who performed the ‘Mestika (Geliga) Embun’ at the enthronement of Sultan Muzaffar Shah I (the first sultan of Perak in 1528) in Tanah Abang.

Mestika Embun is now a part of the regalia of the sultan of Perak, being used for the enthronement ceremony.

The second location is the tomb of Raja Bendahara Alang Iskandar, which is also known as ‘Marhum Teja’ at Kota Bharu, Gopeng, and visited only by Sultan Nazrin Shah.

Subsequently on May 10, the royal couple will make a pilgrimage to the tombstone of Sultan Mansur Shah I, the second sultan of Perak, in Masjid Kota Lama Kanan.

Sultan Mansur Shah I does not have a tomb except for a tombstone that is placed inside the mosque in his remembrance, as he was believed to have become invisible while performing Friday prayers.

The next location is the tomb of Sultan Ali Al Mukammal Inayat Shah, the 24th sultan of Perak in Gedong Siam, Sayong and followed by the tomb of Sultan Yusuf Sharifuddin Mudzafar Shah (the 27th sultan) in Masjid Sayong Tengah.

In the evening on the same day, Sultan Nazrin Shah and Tuanku Zara are to visit the tombs of Sultan Abdullah Muhammad Shah II (26th Sultan), Sultan Idris Murshidul’adzam Shah 1 (28th Sultan), Sultan Abdul Jalil Karamatullah Shah (29th Sultan).

Sultan Iskandar Shah (30th Sultan), Sultan Abdul Aziz Almustasim Billah Shah (31st Sultan), Sultan Yussuff Izzuddin Shah (32nd Sultan), Sultan Idris Iskandar Al-Mutawakkil Allahi Shah II (33rd Sultan) and Sultan Azlan Muhibbuddin Shah (34th Sultan).

Tombs located at the Bukit Chandan Royal Cemetery

All the tombs are located at the Bukit Chandan Royal Cemetery or more well-known as the Al-Ghufran Royal Cemetery which is located besides the Ubudiah Mosque.

On May 11, both their Royal Highnesses will visit the tomb of the fourth Sultan of Perak, Sultan Tajul Ariffin on Pulau Semat, Manong and then to the tomb of Raja Sulong Ibni Sultan Ismail Mu'abidin Riayat Shah in Kampung Tepus Belanja.

In the evening, the royal couple will visit the tombs of Sultan Mudzaffar Shah III (13th Sultan) in Kampung Selat, Bota and Sultan Alauddin Shah (Fifth Sultan) and Sultan Ahmaddin Shah (18th Sultan) in Kampung Bota Kanan.

Subsequently, on May 12, Sultan Nazrin Shah and Tuanku Zara will visit the tomb of Sultan Mudzaffar Shah II (10th Sultan) in Kampung Air Mati, Lambor Kanan.

The royal couple will proceed to the tombs of Sultan Mudzaffar Shah I (1st Sultan) in Kampung Telok Bakong, Lambor Kanan, Sultan Mahmud Shah (Eighth Sultan) and Sultan Muhammad Shah (14th Sultan), both located in Kampung Melayu Pulau Tiga.

They would then travel to Kampung Jawa, in the Mukim of Pulau Tiga to visit the tombs of Sultan Mahmud Iskandar Shah (11th Sultan), Sultan Alaudin Mughayat (Riayat) Shah (12th Sultan) and Sultan Ahmad Tajuddin Shah (Third Sultan) in Kampung Jawa, in the Mukim of Pulau Tiga.

Sultan Nazrin Shah and Tuanku Zara will also visit the remnant of the tomb of Geronggong at the Mukim of Pulau Tiga, Kampung Gajah.

In the morning of May 13, they will visit the tombs of Sultan Abdullah  Mua'azzam Shah (20th Sultan) and Sultan Ja’far Mua'azzam Shah (23rd Sultan) in Kampung Pulau Juar.

The royal couple will also visit the tombstone of Raja Ahmad Waliullah (Raja Kecil Tengah) in Kampung Pulau Besar. His tomb does not exist as he was said to have just disappeared.

Sultan Nazrin Shah and Tuanku Zara will board the Balai Gambang to go downstream of Sungai Perak from the jetty at Pasir Salak to visit five tombs located on the bank of Sungai Perak.

The tombs were those of Sultan Mahmud Shah (16th Sultan) in Kampung Pasir Pulai, Sultan Abdul Malik Mansur Shah (19th Sultan) in Kampung Bandar Baru, Sultan Alauddin Mansur Shah Iskandar Muda (17th Sultan) in Kampung Teluk Memali.

Sultan Shahabuddin Riayat Shah (12th Sultan) in Tanjung Penangguh and Sultan Iskandar Dzulkarnain (15th Sultan) in Pulau Indera Sakti Pasir Panjang Ulu.

They will then travel by car from the jetty at Kampung Terengganu, Teluk Intan and head for Kampung Durian Sebatang, Teluk Intan to visit the tomb of Sultan Abdullah Muhammad Shah I (22nd Sultan).

At every tomb, the Sultan of Perak and Raja Permaisuri of Perak will hold prayers (tahlil) and feast for the deceased.

The enthronement of the Sultan of Perak XXXV which encompasses six major ceremonies, namely the Commencement Ceremony, the Customary Enthronement, Invocation of the Perak Guardian Spirits, Pilgrimage to the Royal Tombs, Setting Foot on Beting Beras Basah and Completion Ceremony, highlights the uniqueness and richness of the customs of the Perak Malay Sultanate since 1528.
