Come to 'World Press Festival' at @Kini
In conjunction with the recent World Press Freedom Day, the secretariat of Gerakan Media Marah (Geramm) invites the public to join in ‘World Press Festival’ celebrations tomorrow.
Organised by Geramm in collaboration with Malaysiakini , the event also aims to highlight press freedom issues, said organising committee member Fathi Aris Omar.
Activities that will be held include a forum featuring young authors such as Zul Fikiri Zamir, Wan Ji Wan Hussin and Benz Ali. Another forum will feature editors such as Terence Fernandez from The Edge and Noor Azam Shairi from Astro Awani.
They will be scheduled to speak on ‘Book Banning: Free Terrorism’ and ‘The Emerging Trends in Online Portals’ respectively.
Other interesting activities include the sale of posters and T-shirts, and there will be a booth selling food and drinks where ‘special kebabs' (KeBAB51) will be sold.
There will also be a book sale by the Geramm secretariat and other publishers such as Thukul Cetak, Merpati Jingga, Neon Terbit and Legasi Oakheart.
The celebration will end with the screening of the film ‘The Company You Keep’.
Transport provided
The one-day celebration will take place at Malaysiakini ’s new office building @Kini starting from 2pm onwards. Admission is free and transport will be provided to and from Malaysiakini .
Pickups will be arranged at Taman Jaya LRT station from 1.30pm onwards up till 11pm.
“We hope to merge activists, publishers, writers, editors and their readers through this celebration.
“Press freedom is not solely limited to the media and the practitioners, the public and society have to come together to support press freedom,” said Fathi ( photo ).
This event is supported by the Selangor State Cultural Committee and the Centre for Independent Journalism Malaysia (CIJ).
