Nik Mohamad Abduh, son of late PAS spiritual leader Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat, today announced that he is gunning for the PAS Youth chief post in the upcoming party elections in June.

"After evaluating the views of my fellow comrades and mulling over a number of factors in PAS' struggle for political Islam, I hereby humbly announce my candidacy for the position of PAS Youth chief," he said in a Facebook posting this evening.

Nik Abduh said while he was nominated to defend his PAS central committee's  post as well as contest the PAS Youth chief position, he chose the latter.

He will go up against incumbent Suhaizan Kaiat who is expected to defend his position but has yet to make a formal announcement.

Nik Abduh is presently already a PAS central committee member but the 45-year-old appears to be trying to make a comeback in the youth wing.

Prior to becoming a PAS central committee member, he was PAS Youth deputy chief while the head of the wing at that time was Nasruddin Hassan.

Both are vocal conservatives aligned to the party's ulama faction.

Current PAS Youth leader Suhaizan, who is a progressive leader in the conservative-dominated wing, has struggled to get his rank and file to rally around him.

If Nik Abduh succeeds in the polls, it will mark the return of ulama leadership to the PAS Youth wing.
