‘Indonesia to accept many foreign workers by 2030'

Indonesia’s Ministry of Labour and Transmigration has estimated that Indonesia will begin to accept foreign workers in large numbers by 2030 for lower-level labour markets that are no longer filled by Indonesian workers, Indonesia’s Antara news agency reported.

“International institutions predicted that by 2030, Indonesia will rank fifth to seventh among the best economies of the world. Therefore, operator positions then will no longer be filled by local workers,” Head of Research Development and Information of the Ministry of Labour and Transmigration Sugiarto Sumas said in Batam yesterday.

It is estimated that by 2030, all Indonesians will have jobs and widespread unemployment will no longer be prevalent, he added.

“Indonesia will need workers for operator positions. These posts will be filled by foreign workers from countries whose economies are not as good as Indonesia’s,” Sumas affirmed.

Currently, as the number of unemployed in Indonesia is still too large, foreign workers in Indonesia take up only certain positions.

So to manage the foreign workers, the government should prepare regulations on issuing work permits for them, he pointed out.

“Foreigners given the work permits should be supervised well to ensure that they are not misused,” Sumas remarked.
