Both the Kelantan and federal governments have failed flood victims in the state who are still homeless half a year since floods paralysed the state, a DAP-linked group Gabungan Impian Kelantan (GIK) said.

"We keep our promises, unlike the federal government that have promised to repair and rebuild more than 1,000 houses before Ramadan (which starts June 17).

"But as of now, according to the report by the Prime Minister’s Office, only five houses have been completed," said DAP organising secretary Anthony Loke.

The federal government blamed the state for the delays, claiming that it is still waiting for approval for land to build the homes but the state says all approvals have been given.

But Loke (photo) says it is "unacceptable" that both are "blaming each other".

"They have delayed the reconstruction process […] they should be ashamed of themselves," he said.

He was speaking at a press conference to announce GIK’s 'Bruce Lee 75 Charity Art Exhibition' to raise funds to build homes for victims.

GIK is an initiative by DAP in collaboration with several NGOs such as Cakna UT, Yayasan Darul Hijrah, Royalti Kelantan, KB Care and Persatuan Anak Kelantan Darul Naim di Selangor to help in the rebuilding of flood-damaged homes in Kelantan.

Not a single sen

Asked about the Kelantan state government’s feedback on GIK, Loke said the project aimed to help the flood victims and there was no political agenda.

"The purpose of this project is to help the people in Kelantan. In fact, we do not need the consent of the government as this is a project initiated by the public.

"We did not take a single sen from the federal and state government," he said.  

The 'Bruce Lee Glorious 75 Charity Art Exhibition' organised by GIK in collaboration with Hong Kong Bruce Lee Club and Malaysia Mandarin Comic Society aims to raise RM200,000 to assist in the reconstruction of homes in Kampung Pasir Tumboh.

Loke said to date, the NGO has completed 32 houses in Kampung Pasir Tumboh and aims to rebuild all 45 homes by Ramadan.

 

"We will complete this project and hand over the houses to the Kelantan flood victims by June 11, just before Ramadan," he said. 

The exhibition will kick off on May 29 in ICT Mall, Komtar Penang and proceed to Kuala Lumpur, Ipoh and Kota Baru.  

Among artists and illustrators contributing their work to this exhibition include Yuen Taiyung, Adam Chow, Tsui Shing On and Cheung Man Yau. All of the proceedings from the artwork sold will be channeled to Tabung Impian Kelantan.
