The appeal by Umno-linked blogger Wan Muhammad Azri Wan Deris - better known as Papagomo - against paying damages of RM800,000 to former opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim, will be heard on Aug 28 at the Court of Appeal.

 

This was decided by the court following case management yesterday. Lawyer Shahid Adli is appearing for Anwar.

 Judicial Commissioner Rosilah Yop in February at the High Court last year, found the blogger was liable for defamation by putting up lewd images of Anwar with another man, just before the 13th general election on his website.

Anwar ( photo ) has vehemently held the photos were false.

 

Besides the RM800,000 award granted by the High Court, Rosilah also ordered Wan Muhammad Azri to pay RM50,000 in costs.

Anwar had filed a RM100 million defamation suit against Wan Muhammad Azri in 2013.

 

Wan Muhammad Azri is also appealing a ruling made by Rosilah in accepting the testimony which was accepted by the High Court, where another blogger confirmed Papagomo's identity as that of Wan Muhammad Azri.

 

Wan Muhammad Azri was also ordered by the Federal Court in September last year, to pay RM300,000 in damages for a defamatory posting on businessman Abdul Razak Mohd Noor.

 

He was also found guilty of defaming senior Kelantan lawyer Sukri Mohamed when the Court of Appeal in January this year, overturned the Kota Bharu High Court’s decision to dismiss the lawyer's suit.
