State-level Gawai Dayak festivity in Kuching on June 3

More than 3,000 members of the Dayak community will attend the state-level Gawai Dayak dinner gathering in Kuching on June 3.

The function this year is hosted by the Dayak Bidayuh community through the Dayak Bidayuh National Association (DBNA), said its organising chairperson Michael Manyin.

He said the Iban community through the Dayak Cultural Foundation and the Orang Ulu community through the Federation of the Orang Ulu Sarawak Malaysia (Forum) were the other joint organisers.

“The function will be held at the DBNA headquarters at Ong Tiang Swee Road beginning at 8.15pm.

“We are extending our welcome to the other races as it is Sarawak’s longstanding tradition for all races to celebrate each other’s festivals irrespective of the race or religion,” Manyin, who is also state Minister of Infrastructure Development and Communications tod a media conference in Kuching today.

He said one of the highlights of the evening’s programme would be the parade by Gawai beauty contest winners from the Orang Ulu, Bidayuh and Iban communities, who would wear their respective traditional costumes.

“We will also have the usual cultural performances by the three communities as well.

“To show the Dayak community unity and cohesiveness, which is the theme for the celebration, the DBNA headquarters  will be decked with their respective traditional decorations, too,” he added.
