Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin has refused to comment about deported Hong Kong youth activist Joshua Wong.

Met at an event in Kuala Lumpur, he apologised for not knowing the person who Time magazine named 'the face of Hong Kong’s resistance against China’s influence'.

"I don't know who he (Wong) is. Sorry," he told journalists before walking off after an event in Kuala Lumpur.

The 18-year-old was one of the key movers of last year's 'Umbrella Revolution', the biggest open demonstration against the Chinese government in modern times.

The Malaysian immigration detained Wong shortly after he arrived at Penang airport on Tuesday.

The activist had arrived on Dragonair Flight KA633 at Penang International Airport at 11.55am.

 

He was put back on the same Dragonair aircraft under Flight KA634 back to Hong Kong which was scheduled to leave at 12.55pm.

 

Wong was due to speak at a series of talks this week about the student movement and in remembrance of China's Tiananmen Square massacre. Malaysiakini is a media partner of the forum.

Immigration Department director-general Mustafa Ibrahim said Wong was deported because he is on the immigration blacklist due to security reasons.
