Malay rights pressure group Perkasa may have threatened to burn the Bible once, but that has not stopped it from being invited to the official launch of the newly-formed Christians for Peace and Harmony in Malaysia (CPHM).

Perkasa president Ibrahim Ali said he has received the invitation to the launch of CPHM by Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak at the Hotel Majestic in Kuala Lumpur tonight.

"This group is seeking peace and harmony. It's organisers may be Christians, but they are reaching out to all religions. Thus, I will attend the launch because I uphold the Federal Constitution.

"People have been accusing us of all sorts of things. But we have never been 'anti-anyone'. We just uphold the constitution," Ibrahim ( photo )  told Malaysiakini .

He said a total of six Perkasa representatives will be present.

Ibrahim said Perkasa was "strict" about issues concerning the Islamic religion, but maintains that this was strictly in accordance to the Federal Constitution.

"Article 11 of the constitution talks of freedom of religion, with Islam as the official religion.

"There is freedom of religion, but non-Muslims cannot preach to Muslims. We can't agree with (attempts to convert Muslims), so we protest," he said.

According to CPHM chairperson Rev Wong Kim Kong, the new organisation is a non-partisan movement and will work to bridge the religious divide in the country.

However, there are critics who claim that the move is an attempt to shore up Christian support for BN.

Ibrahim denied knowledge that CPHM has BN links.

"I don't know if they are pro-BN or not. I am just one of their guests."
