Malaysia recorded over 200 percent jump in Internet bandwidth consumption to 760,331 Megabits per second (Mbps) in 2014 from 349,277 Mbps in 2013, the Malaysian Internet Exchange (MyIX) said.

MyIX, a non-profit organisation initiated by the Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), attributed the increase in Internet consumption to the greater prevalence of social media platforms and users, use of applications such as MyTeksi and Uber, online games and e-commerce purchases.

“MCMC’s survey in 2011 showed about 36 million phone users were subscribed in Malaysia which rose to nearly 45 million by end 2014 with a 148.5 penetration rate per inhabitant.

“This shows that technically, the introduction of MCMC’s Youth Communication Package (YCP) helped to increase nationwide phone subscribers by 25 percent,” said MyIX chairperson Chiew Kok Hin in a statement.
