Tourism and Culture Minister Nazri Abdul Razak has rejected  his fellow cabinet member Shahidan Kassim's suggestion  that the gruesome human trafficking camps near the Malaysian-Thai border be turned into a tourist spot.

“It's simply not right to even talk about this wh en the wound of the tragic event is still fresh,” he said.

"It is not appropriate to talk about it for now. It's too soon," he responded when asked if his ministry would consider Shahidan's proposal.

Shahidan, who is minister in the prime minister's department drew flak for suggesting there was tourist potential in the abandoned human trafficking camps ( photo ) discovered near the border.

He floated the idea after visiting one such macabre camp site on Sunday and went on to describe it as 'very nice' and that it had 'complete facilities'.

'Not important'

"It is the largest camp among the 16 camp sites we found and it is located around 100 metres from the border.

"Everything is still intact. There was a surau, a wooden mosque, an house for an imam, a vegetable farm and many more.

“There was also some Thai writing inside the mosque.

"Let tourists see where it all happened. With this as a new tourism spot, it will also deter human trafficking activities from taking place as there will be more people coming in and out," the Star Online quoted him on Sunday.

Shahidan ( photo ) said the camps weren't built by Malaysians though the structures showed a certain level of expertise.

Nazri further said that so far nobody had made the suggestion to his ministry.

"(The ministry would only consider a proposal) if someone has made request […] I have not received any suggestion as yet.

"So let it be. This is not important for me," said the Padang Rengas MP.
