Two-and-a-half-years after Nallan Selvaraja was found murdered in Kuala Lumpur, his family, dissatisfied with the police handling of the case, plans to call for an inquest.

The family's lawyer, M Visvanathan, said if the police do not take the required actions within 14 days, he will, on behalf of the family, request from the High Court in Kuala Lumpur that an inquest be held.

"The family is owed a briefing from the police about the status of this case," Visvanathan said at a press conference in Petaling Jaya today.

The family of Nallan ( photo ) claimed that despite numerous police reports and attempts to contact the investigating officer (IO), they still do not know the progress of the case.

Nallan's brother Saravana Selvaraja said the last time the family managed to contact the IO, they were told that the sole suspect in the case had been released on police bail for a month, pending the release of the forensics results.

This was on Dec 18, 2012.

Nallan, a part-time taxi driver, was found murdered in his taxi in Kuala Lumpur on Nov 4, 2012.

He had a slit neck, 16 stab wounds and was partially burned.

While his wallet and mobile phone were not found, the police had ruled out robbery and deemed this "an act of revenge".

Saravana said he had requested help from many authorities, including the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam), but all the family's efforts were met with no response from the police.

He has now asked Suara Rakyat Malaysia (Suaram) to help with his brother's case.

"I am tired of making police reports, but still there is no response from police," Saravana said.

Suaram project coordinator Tarmizi Anuwar said his organisation would pursue this case until the suspect is brought to  court.

Nallan's family said they were told that the suspect had confessed to the crime one day before he was released on police bail.

Since then, the suspect has not been arrested or charged with anything.

"I just want justice for my son," Nallan's mother, N Anjala, cried while holding a picture of her deceased son.
