PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail met with a senior leader from the new PAS leadership yesterday to discuss the Islamic party’s position in Pakatan Rakyat and the future of the coalition.

A source revealed to Malaysiakini that Wan Azizah initiated the meeting with the leader from the Dewan Ulama following the call to all PAS members to resign from state government posts in Selangor and Penang.

However, the source declined to reveal details of the discussion, nor the identity of the PAS leader, except to say that he is an influential ulama who won one of the top three posts in last week’s party elections.

All eyes are now on the new central working committee, which will meet for the first time todayt at the PAS headquarters in Kuala Lumpur, and possibly discuss the controversial motion passed during the muktamar last week.

Yesterday, Sinar Harian in a front page report quoted PAS election committee chairperson Asmuni Awi ( photo ) as saying the Islamic party needed to reconvene a muktamar to withdraw the motion on severing ties with DAP so as to prevent the party’s representatives in the Selangor and Penang governments to be stuck in a limb.

Meanwhile, PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim has urged PAS to review its motion to cut ties with DAP, which was approved at the recent muktamar.

"I urge PAS to review the motion that was approved without debate, and not to implement it at this moment," Anwar, who is currently serving his jail sentence in the Sungai Buloh Prison, said in a statement sent through his lawyer yesterday.

DAP has also added to the pressure, with its Selangor chief Tony Pua urging state Menteri Besar Azmin Ali to choose which party PKR wants to cooperate with to rule the state, given that PAS was cutting ties with DAP.

"PAS wants Azmin to choose which party he wants (to work with). DAP shares the same view. So, we leave it for Azmin to decide," Pua said yesterday.
