Syura council to decide on ties with DAP first

PAS' syura council will have to decide on the request by the PAS muktamar to cut ties with DAP before the central committee can do so.
The party's vice president Mohd Amar Nik Abdullah ( photo ) said the resolution passed by the muktamar originated from the Dewan Ulama, thus the syura council, which consists of ulama leaders, will have to deliberate on the matter first.
"The resolution originated from the ulama wing, thus the syura council will discuss the matter first.
"After that, the syura council will inform the central committee of their decision," he said when contacted.
The PAS central committee is slated to meet tonight, but the resolution to cut ties with DAP is not officially on the agenda.
However, the syura council has not decided on a meeting date.
PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man ( photo ), the purpose of the meeting is to talk about technical matters.
"Our inaugural meeting is about co-opting central committee members and appointing heads of the lajnah (bureaus)," he told Malaysiakini .
However, this does not mean that the matter would not crop up during the meeting.
Ultimately, PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang will decide if the matter is discussed any meeting, said Mohd Amar.
Jobs at stake
PAS' ties with DAP have been on the rocks since last year, following the Islamist party's renewed push for the implementation of hudud law in Kelantan.
DAP argued that this was against Pakatan's common policy and that PAS had acted unilaterally in pursuing an agenda which would radically change the nature of Malaysia's criminal justice system.
Abdul Hadi was blamed as the main culprit for this and thus DAP has cut ties with him and accusing him of acting dishonestly .
PAS Ulama wing and youth wing reacted by passing resolutions during the recent muktamar, urging the central committee and syura council to cut ties with DAP, because of insults thrown at Abdul Hadi.
The resolutions were adopted by the PAS main body muktamar - the highest decision making body in the party - without debate.
Following this, Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said PAS members should step down from positions in his administration, because he is the DAP secretary-general and thus their presence in the Penang government was thus untenable .
It is estimated that PAS members hold 1,100 government positions in Penang and about 5,000 in Selangor.
Several PAS leaders, who are not aligned to Abdul Hadi, have already taken the initiative to quit their government positions in Penang, because they believe the matter was fait accompli .
