Sleepless Zaid calls Najib shallow

Zaid Ibrahim is sleepless.

The former law minister's insomnia bout started after reading Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak description of Dr Mahathir Mohamad as the "master of spin".

"I can't sleep when I read Najib calling Tun M (Mahathir) master of spin. The master is one who spends millions of taxpayers' money to look good," he tweeted.

"Tun M is a man of substance, there is no doubt. Najib is clearly shallow and has difficulty differentiating facts from fiction," he added.

In a blog post yesterday, Najib said Mahathir is a veteran politician and a master of public perception .

"He understands that political statements are not entirely about the truth but about what the people will believe in the court of public opinion.

"This is why he continues to make insinuations, speaking half-truths, cracking misleading jokes and twisting statements to make his views exciting and palatable," he had said.

Meanwhile, Zaid also defended Mahathir with regard to Terengganu Umno information chief Wan Abdul Hakim Wan Mokhtar 's criticism.

The latter had pointed out that billions of the nation's funds were lost during Mahathir's tenure.

Among the scandals involving Mahathir, he said, were the RM30 billion lost by Bank Negara on the foreign exchange market and the bailout of Malaysia Airlines (MAS).

However, Zaid claimed there is a difference.

"It's not ok to lose millions even during Tun M (Mahathir's time) but the difference is this. Tun did not put the money in Cayman Islands or Singapore. Najib did," he said in reference to 1MDB.
