The internal conflict in Pakatan Rakyat is set to drag on as the much anticipated PAS syura council meeting has yet to convene.

The new council was just formed yesterday, following the party’s central committee’s first meeting last night.

However, PAS spiritual leader Haron Din himself conceded that technically, he is still not the office bearer of that post.

“Now I am no longer the PAS spiritual leader. The syura (council) has finished its term.

“When it (the council) is reconstituted by the PAS central committee, the spiritual leader will be appointed and it may not be me,” he said.

Haron added that so far, he does not know when the syura council meeting will be held. In addition, he is scheduled to start his two-week pilgrimage to Mecca on Monday next week.

“Everything will be determined in the meeting that will be held who-knows-when. Therefore I am going for my pilgrimage for two weeks on June 15,” he told Malaysiakini last night.

Syura council meetings are normally chaired by the spiritual leader.

Meanwhile, syura council secretary Nik Zawawi Nik Salleh ( photo ) did not give a clear response when asked when the council would convene a meeting.

“It is in Allah’s knowledge,” the former Pasir Puteh MP chuckled in reply.

The turmoil between PAS and DAP appears to have worsened when PAS approved a motion from its ulama wing to sever ties with DAP during its muktamar in Kuala Selangor last week.

The conflict between the two parties has also escalated when both sides made public statements about each other’s alleged wrongdoings.

Some PAS members have also left the party in disappointment over the outcome of the party’s 61st muktamar.

PAS’ new leadership did not discuss the motion during its first meeting last night.

In addition, following the muktamar’s results, Penang chief minister and DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng had also urged all PAS representatives in the state government’s posts to vacate their positions.
