Special Malay-Islamic architectural guidelines for the development of Kampung Bharu were launched today to complement the implementation of the detailed Kampung Bharu development master plan.

The guidelines were launched to ensure the survival of the Malay and Islamic identity of the area.

Kampung Baharu Corporation (PKB) chairperson Astaman Abdul Aziz said the guidelines covered a 121.96-hectare (301.38 acres) development area.

"The significance of these guidelines is for Malay-Islamic architectural treasures to be enlivened and preserved," he told reporters after launching the guidelines, here.

He said developers and architects involved in the project were urged to refer to the 67 criteria in the guidelines for the development of Kampung Bharu, which spans from Jalan Raja Abdullah, through Jalan Raja Muda Abdul Aziz and up to Jalan Tun Razak.

Not rigid rules

Astaman said the guidelines had been prepared in collaboration with 131 local architects and professionals from the public and private sectors since June 2013, based on two key components of 'Space' and 'Forms'.

"The space functions as a generator of Malay community activities and strengthens the neighbourhood spirit, as well as promotes the role of a ' kariah ' (local community), while forms are important for the buildings to become a symbol and identity of the Kampung Bharu community.

"The two components are harmonised with Malay-Islamic core values and culture, to ensure the image and identity of Kampung Bharu as a modern, unique, user-friendly, secure, innovative and iconic city in the world."

However, he added, it was not mandatory for the guidelines to be followed in full at the expense of creativity in the development process of Kampung Bharu.

PKB is an incorporated government agency, which among other things, serves as the main coordinating body for the development of Kampung Bharu.
