A DAP leader has questioned the contradictions between Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Inspector-General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar's statements on investigations into 1MDB.

Tony Pua said the minister had claimed the police investigation into 1MDB was concluded on March 9 and the investigation papers were submitted to the Attorney-General's Chambers for a further directive.

But on March 9 itself, he added, Khalid confirmed that police are investigating 1MDB through a new task force formed to probe the strategic investment company.

Khalid was reported as saying the task force comprises the police, Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) and the AG's Chambers and that its scope would include investigating the prime minister, who is also finance minister.

"(Thus) I'm even more surprised that the investigation into 1MDB has been completed and submitted to the AG more than three months ago, on March 9," Pua said in a statement today.

The Petaling Jaya Utara MP cited Khalid as saying the special squad would investigate information received by the police on March 22, and in June asked for more time for the investigation.

"If the home minister is telling the truth, then we have to ask what is the AG doing, sitting on the investigation papers for the past three months?" he asked.

Minister must answer glaring questions

Pua said Zahid should answer the glaring question of how the ministry was able to inform Parliament that the investigation had been completed.

"Or, is this another example of the Home Ministry's left hand being totally clueless about what the right hand is doing, a state of affairs which is becoming the norm rather than the exception in the Najib administration?" he asked.

The Selangor DAP chief also condemned the minister for evading his parliamentary question if businessman Jho Low, a key figure in the 1MDB had been questioned.

"I've asked if Jho Low has been questioned (by the police) as documents leaked show 1MDB's fund had been transferred to his account," he said.

 

"I'm disappointed that there was no reference made to the police report, which I made personally on March 4, 2015, against the various parties relating to 1MDB, including Jho Low," Pua added.
