The High Court in Kuala Lumpur today fixed July 14 for case management of former opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim’s defamation suit against Senator S Nallakaruppan.

Judicial Commissioner Mohd Zaki Abdul Wahab set the date in chambers, in the presence of lawyer Shahid Adli Kamarudin, representing Anwar, and another lawyer, Sarah Abishegam, representing Nallakaruppan.

Shahid Adli later told reporters that they had filed an appeal on June 10 at the Court of Appeal over Mohd Zaki’s decision to allow Nallakarupan’s application to cross-examine Anwar on his previous conviction.

On May 15, counsel Latheefa Koya raised an objection to the question by counsel Muhammad Shafee Abdullah, representing Nallakarupan, on the written judgment by Chief Justice Abdul Hamid Mohamed in Anwar’s Sodomy I case, alleging that Anwar had homosexual tendencies.

Also objected to were questions posed on Anwar’s conviction in the Sodomy II case for sodomising his personal aide, Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan, 27, in 2008, for which he was sentenced to five years’ jail on Feb 10, this year.

Anwar, 68, filed the suit on Aug 25, 2008 over alleged defamatory remarks made by Nallakaruppan in an article titled, ‘Anwar terima RM60 juta’ (Anwar receives RM60 million) which was published in the Mingguan Malaysia and Sinar Harian newspapers in August, 2008.
