Three killed in shopping mall collapse in Alor Gajah

Three construction workers, all Myanmar nationals, were killed, after the parking lot of a shopping mall under construction at Alor Gajah collapsed today.

Malacca police chief Chuah Ghee Lye said during the 2.15pm incident at the parking lot of the mall which was under construction in Pulau Sebang, three others were seriously injured while another three suffered minor injuries.

"All were from Myanmar. The workers were removing (staging) from the hardened concrete floor when the whole floor suddenly collapsed.

"We are investigating the actual cause of the collapse. We are also inspecting the entire structure of the building to ensure it is safe," he told reporters at the scene today.

Chuah said 122 search and rescue personnel from the police and Fire and Rescue Department and the Specialised Medical Assistance Response Team (Smart) were carrying out a search and rescue operation at the site. Those injured were sent to the Tampin Hospital.

The Fire and Rescue Department, via a WhatsApp post, said fire and rescue personnel from Negri Sembilan were also helping out.

Meanwhile, a shopkeeper, Mohd Daud Ali, 34, said he was sleeping when he heard a loud noise and quickly rushed to investigate since the construction was just behind his shop.

"I saw three people trapped under the rubble but I could not do anything because I was traumatised. A number of workers had also managed to escape," he said.
