A fire broke out at one of the silos (intermediate product storage vessel) at Petronas Chemicals LDPE Sdn Bhd (PC LDPE) in Kertih at about 5pm yesterday.

According to a statement from Petronas, the incident was confined to PC LDPE and there was no impact to production at other PCG plants.

“The incident has been brought under control and there are no casualties or injuries reported. All the relevant authorities have been informed about this incident,” it said.    

The statement said there was no immediate threat to on-site personnel or the surrounding community.

An investigation will be carried out to determine the cause of the fire and the extent of damage to property, it said.

Meanwhile, Terengganu Fire and Rescue Zone 2 officer Azmi Abdul Rahim, when contacted by Bernama , said that as soon as they were alerted about the incident, a 35-strong team including a Hazmat (Hazardous Materials) unit and three fire engines were despatched to the scene.

He said they doused the flames by 9pm and did a mopping-up operation.

“We also did cooling operations so as to prevent flammable materials from igniting,” he said, adding that the management of the plant had closed off a key valve to prevent the fire from spreading to the surrounding areas.
