Electrical goods firm fined RM30,000 for profiteering

Sengheng Electric (KL) Sdn Bhd was fined RM30,000 by the Sessions Court in Malacca today for profiteering.

Judge Amran Jantan handed down the sentence after the company, represented by its finance manager, Mah Chin Ngiap, pleaded guilty to the charge.

When handing down the sentence, Imran said he took into account public interests.

Sengheng Electric (KL) Sdn Bhd was charged with making unreasonably high profit by marking up the price of a Pensonic 50 ML Mini Bar PEN-PMF-65 from RM459 to RM479 at its premise at SENQ, Lot F78A, First Floor, Mahkota Parade, Jalan Merdeka in Malacca at 11.50am last March 26.

The charge was made under Section 14 (1) of the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act 2011.

Earlier, deputy public prosecutor from the Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry, Khairul Fikrie Ahmad Zubaidi, who prosecuted, asked the court to impose a deterrent sentence as a lesson to others.

The sentence should serve as a message to the society that the law always protect consumers, he added.

The company paid the fine.
