Umno bureau to discuss deferment of party polls

The Umno constitution and legal bureau will meet in two days’ time to discuss the postponement by 18 months of the party elections by the supreme council.

Party vice-president Hishammuddin Hussein said the meeting would also discuss the direction and how to ensure the party’s constitutional amendment process and elections would be smooth.

“I, as the bureau chairperson, feel relieved as we now have more time to improve the amendments to the party’s constitution.

“Many want it (Umno elections) to be deferred... besides that, we will also be able to receive more feedback from our members including the grassroots,” he told reporters at the Parliament lobby in Kuala Lumpur today.

Last Friday, Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak announced the Umno supreme council’s decision to defer the party elections by 18 months to enable it to focus on serving the people and on strengthening unity among the members.

Najib, who is also Umno president, said the deferment was made in accordance with clause 10.16 of the party constitution which gave the supreme council the power to postpone the elections at the council, divisional and branch levels.
