Outspoken cabinet minister Mohd Shafie Apdal wants to weigh-in on Majlis Amanah Rakyat's (Mara) controversial property purchase in Australia, but only on a later date.

"On Mara, I will talk about it during the Mara's buka puasa function on July 7," said Mohd Shafie, who is Rural and Regional Development Minister.

Mohd Shafie said this during a breaking of fast event at the Institute for Rural Advancement (Infra) headquarters in Serdang, Selangor.

Australian authorities are investigating claims that Mara's acquisition of an apartment block in Melbourne involved hefty kickbacks for Malaysian government officials.

Mara has denied any wrongdoing and voluntarily supplied information to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).

On the Umno supreme council's decision to postpone its supreme council elections by 18 months, Mohd Shafie replied: "He is the president. It is his prerogative".

Umno president Najib Abdul Razak said that the supreme council had agreed to the postponement in order to allow the party to strengthen itself and for its members to serve the public.

Critics however claim that Najib was buying time in order to shore up support for himself.

Umno's leadership election was originally slated for next year. With the postponement, the Umno polls would only be held after the next general election.
