Following rebuke from fellow politicians about his offer to head Selangor, former menteri besar Khalid Ibrahim said he does not covet the position.

"I only made an offer; it doesn't mean they will accept," he said today at a press conference in Putrajaya.

He had just attended a breaking fast event titled 'Iftar Amal Darul Fuqaha'.

"The reason (for my offer) is to show my readiness to be responsible. I wasn't even thinking about becoming MB again," he said.

If someone were unable to perform their tasks or responsibilities well, he said he was willing to take over the burden.

"That is all," he insisted.

After all, he said, leaders must be responsible to the people and fulfill their promises to them.

Also present at the breaking of fast event was PAS spiritual leader Haron Din and Dewan Ulama information chief Mohd Khairuddin Aman Razali Al-Takiri.

Ridiculed by former colleague

Khalid was sacked from PKR last year for refusing to give up his post to party president Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.

This triggered the Selangor menteri besar crisis, where Khalid refused to budge, claiming he had the state assembly's majority as an independent.

The crisis was eventually resolved when PKR decided to abide by the Selangor sultan's choice of PKR deputy Azmin Ali ( photo ) to take over as MB.

On June 26 this year, the Malay Mail Online reported that Khalid had offered to take up the MB job again to help end the current uncertainty over the state government, triggered by PAS’s motion to sever ties with DAP at its June muktamar.

However, his offer was ridiculed by a number of people, including former PKR colleague, Ampang MP Zuraida Kamaruddin.
