The Attorney-General's Chambers is applying to be a party in Gerakan's motion before the Federal Court to challenge the constitutionality of the Kelantan hudud law passed by the Kelantan assembly last March.

This was revealed by lawyers Chai Ko Thing and Ong Siang Liang who appeared for Gerakan during case management before Federal Court deputy registrar Jalidah Hamid this afternoon.

They said senior federal counsel M Kogilan Bigai had appeared for the AG's Chambers in today's matter where she indicated the AG  would be intervening in the application and apply to be made a party in the suit.

"The court set Aug 11 for further case management and for the AG's Chambers to put in the required documents for their application to intervene and be named as respondents,” said Chai.

Chai and Ong also revealed that senior lawyer Sulaiman Abdullah ( photo ) will be appearing for the Kelantan PAS-led government.

"On our side, (former Federal Court judge) Gopal Sri Ram has agreed to appear for us, along with Harpal Singh and party adviser Chang Ko Youn,” said Chai.

In cases related to the constitution, the AG can apply to intervene to help the court interpret the Federal Constitution.

It was reported that Gerakan had filed a motion  last May 8 to challenge the Kelantan Syariah Criminal Code (II) 1993 (Amendment) 2015.

Earlier this month, the Kelantan government had made a  preliminary objection  to the motion saying  the Gerakan applicants Tuan Mat Tuan Wil, 64, Soh Hoon Lee, 68, Chung Mon Sie, 49, do not have locus standii (legal standing) in the matter.
