Khairy: Lawyer letter to WSJ a crucial first step

The letter sent by lawyers representing Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak to the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) seeking confirmation about its report is an important first step.

Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin said the letter allows the WSJ to explain what it meant by the newspaper report.

"This is an important first step for us to know what WSJ actually means. I am sure when the clarification comes, follow-up action will be taken.

"If WSJ confirmed it said money from 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) was deposited into the PM's personal account, which PM has denied, I believe the PM will proceed with the lawsuit," he told reporters after visiting the Bazar Ramadan in Gong Badak in Kuala Nerus, Terengganu, today.

Khairy said the move is very important to convince the people that the newspaper report was incorrect.

"Among other measures taken is to seek the result of investigation by the Special Task Force which involves the Attorney-General, the Police (PDRM), the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Commission (MACC), and Bank Negara Malaysia.

"I believe these two steps are very important for us to get a clearer picture of the truth.

"I hope the result of the invesitghation by the Special Task Force will not take too long as there is too much speculation.

"The result of the investigation is very important for us to confirm the truth," he said.
