A total of 7,274 road accidents and 116 deaths were recorded in the five days since the start of the ‘Ops Selamat 7/2015' road safety campaign last Friday in conjunction with Aidilfitri.

Inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar said today 47 of the deaths occurred on federal roads, 26 on state roads, 18 on highways, 13 on municipal roads and 12 on other roads.

Johor and Selangor had the most number of deaths, 20 and 17 respectively, he told a news conference on the ‘Balik Kampung Ops Selamat 7/2015' campaign, at the Gombak Toll Plaza in Kuala Lumpur.

“Motorcyclists and pillion riders were the most number of people who were killed, with 69 cases or 59 percent, followed by motorists, with 25 cases or 21 percent,” he said.

Khalid said that up to yesterday, 301 summonses were issued to road users for misuse of the emergency lane while 1,880 summonses were given to motorists who jumped queue.

He also said that the number of accidents and deaths was much higher than those during the corresponding period last year of 7,153 accidents and 86 deaths.

He described the development as most worrying.

“I have instructed the Traffic Branch to step up control measures and enforcement at the black spots prone to accidents,” he said.
