DAP stalwart Lim Kit Siang today said he wanted to meet with Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak to request for a royal commission inquiry (RCI) into the Low Yat Plaza incident.

"I am going to ask for a meeting with the prime minister because I think it is very, very important to ask him to set up a royal commission inquiry of truth and reconciliation," he said at a press conference at Low Yat Plaza in Kuala Lumpur.

He was there to visit traders at the IT products complex in the aftermath of  violence which hit the venue  last weekend. He was accompanied by party leaders A Samad Said and Bukit Bintang MP Fong Kui Lun.

"Truth to find out what actually happened and caused the Low Yat incident. Reconciliation so that we can work out a blueprint for everybody to reconcile, to come together as Malaysians," Lim ( photo, third from left ) explained.

The root cause of the violence should be dealt with in order to ensure such an incident does not recur again, he stressed.

"This is the first racial riot (in Malaysia) in many decades. We must take it very seriously.

Why is this happening in 2015 after six decades of nation-building?" he asked.

"Like May 13, we pretend (the Low Yat incident) is not a major riot. We have to call it a major riot [...] it involved 100 people.

Gerakan forms committee

On Saturday, a melee occurred at Low Yat Plaza following a handphone theft incident there. 

The next night, a large group gathered outside the mall hurling racial slurs before going on a rampage leaving several injured.

Gerakan president Mah Siew Keong (photo, wearing glasses ) also visited Low Yat Plaza today.

He said in view of the confusion surrounding what happened at Low Yat, the party has decided to form a multi-racial committee to investigate what really happened over the weekend.

"Then we will give our findings to the relevant authorities so that something like this doesn't happen again," he said.
