Blocking access to whistleblower Sarawak Report appears to be an act of desperation by those who are nervous about its contents, said former Bar Council president Ambiga Sreenevasan.

"It is also puzzling as the same issues are being raised elsewhere.

"How about answering what was raised instead? Or if you are aggrieved, and if you dare, sue them," she told Malaysiakini .

Ambiga also questioned why the Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) appears to be acting on orders from the top when it is supposed to be independent.

"Furthermore, they claim they are trying to protect the stability of the country but it looks like they are actually trying to protect the prime minister instead.

"In fact in doing this, they have hurt the prime minister more," she said.

According to Ambiga, political stability can be enhanced if all parties come clean on the clear allegations of misuse of public funds.

"Instead they spend so much time and effort to obfuscate the issues and in the process insult the intelligence of the people.

"Failing to be transparent and failing to respond to simple and obvious issues have lead the people to question if there are in fact any legitimate answers.

"And once again this episode shows a consistent failure by the government and its agencies to act first in the interests of the people and the nation.

"Don't bother muzzling Sarawak Report . It won't work. Just answer the people, please," she said.

Sarawak Report has published a slew of reports regarding 1MDB and how the funds were purportedly abused.

The website has also implicated Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.

Najib has denied any wrongdoing.
