The Prisons Department today denied a report which claimed that the family of former opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim was not allowed to meet him for the Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration.

Its deputy director (prison policy) Supri Hashim said the department had set two days, which was the third and fourth day of Aidilfitri, for Muslim prisoners to meet their family members.

"There are no Muslim prisoners who are denied their rights to meet with their family members in conjunction with Aidilfitri, including Anwar Ibrahim.

"As such, it is hoped that all quarters, including the media, do not issue statements which are not accurate on the Aidilfitri meeting between Muslim prisoners and their families as this could affect the Prisons Department's image," he said in a statement today.

He was commenting reports in newspapers and portals which claimed that Anwar had been denied the right to meet his family for the Aidilfitri celebrations.

Supri said the department had duly informed family members of prison inmates, as well as the public, through the media that the special Aidilfitri meeting between Muslim prisoners and their families would be held on the third and fourth day of Hari Raya.
