The KL City Grand Prix from Aug 7 to 9 will see drivers zip through a 3.2km temporary ‘Grade 3' circuit with 16 turns along well-known streets of the capital city such as Jalan P Ramlee, Jalan Ampang, Jalan Sultan Ismail and Jalan Pinang.

According to the organiser, GT Global Race (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd, the drivers would race on the streets of Kuala Lumpur at estimated speeds of over 200kph to be crowned champion of the city.

The track has 16 corners, 10 turning left and six turning right and aims to provide a challenging drive. The race is expected to draw 150,000 motoring sports fans.

The organising company’s president and chief executive officer M Arrasu told Bernama in Kuala Lumpur today that the circuit has been approved by the International Automobile Federation (FIA) and is now awaiting completion by end of the month.

The Kuala Lumpur Grade 3 circuit, the second after the one in Putrajaya, will place the nation’s capital city as one of the major circuits for motorsport events involving GT and V8 cars. FIA licensing is divided into Grades from 1-6, with grade 1 being the highest where F1 races can be held.

Arrasu said the 3.2-kilometre circuit was designed by  Apex Circuit Design Ltd, an internationally recognised multidisciplinary automotive facility and destination design consultant. The circuit is being built by world leading temporary street circuit specialists KBR.

“Progress for the track arrangement for the three-day race is now up to 85 percent. Even the tarmac for the circuit is specially made, providing better road holding characteristics for the race cars and ensuring better safety for the drivers,” he said.

Arrasu added the layout would represent a typical mix of tight corners and  some sweeping sections and elevation changes.

The track has been designed to take in some of the city’s most iconic locations, including a start and finish area at the foot of the Petronas Twin Towers.

The event is expected to see various GT car races such the Lamborghini Super Cup, Formula Masters, Porsche Carrera Cup and Audi R8 LMS Cup apart from a demonstration of the five best V8 supercars series teams.
