Prasarana wants Spad to review train fares
Prasarana Malaysia Berhad (Prasarana) has requested the Land Public Transport Commission (Spad) to review fares of train services managed by the company.
Prasarana Group managing director Azmi Abdul Aziz said the review should be carried out in line with the increase in maintenance costs as well as electricity tariffs.
“The review on the rates can among other things, offset the existing costs, besides enabling train services to be improved for the public,” he said after a briefing on the Light Rail Transit project (LRT) with the media at the Awan Besar Station in Kuala Lumpur today.
The last time a fare revision was done, was in 2002, he said.
When asked on what should be the new rates, he said it would depend on the assessment of Spad.
Meanwhile, Azmi said four new stations in the first phase of the Ampang LRT line would be operational by Oct 31, namely Awan Besar, Muhibbah, Alam Sutera and Kinrara BK 5.
The second phase of the line would involve an additional seven stations which were currently under construction, and expected to be operational by March 2016.
In addition to the Ampang line, another 12 new stations spanning a 17.4km-route on the Kelana Jaya line, would be operational by June 2016.
In the meantime, Azmi said Prasarana had prepared about 7,000 personnel to operate the Mecca Metro train service which will be operating for the first time during the haj season, this year.
“The 18-kilometre long Mecca Metro line is able to accommodate up to 3,600 pilgrims at one time,” he said.
Prasarana was given the mandate by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to operate the Mecca Metro line, to ensure a smooth pilgrimage season, this year.
