Three activists arrested today over the #TangkapNajib rally are being detained overnight at the police lockup in Jinjang.

Their remand hearing will be held tomorrow at 10am, lawyer Michelle Yesudas, who is representing them together with Honey Tan, told Malaysiakini .

Student leader Adam Adli and Lensa communications officer Shukri Abd Razab were arrested late this afternoon outside the Dang Wangi police district headquarters as they were about to leave after giving their statement.

They were then brought to the Petaling police district headquarters on Old Klang Road, Kuala Lumpur, where another youth activist, Mandeep Singh, was detained after police recorded his statement earlier tonight.

The three are from the Demi Malaysia youth movement which is organising the #TangkapNajib (Apprehend Najib) rally at 2pm tomorrow, calling for Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak's arrest for alleged corruption and abuse of power.

Shukri ( photo, in green shirt ) was hauled up under the Sedition Act, while no details are available yet for Adam's arrest.

Lawyer Eric Paulsen, who accompanied them to the Dang Wangi station earlier, said they were given guarantees that no one would be arrested when they were asked to come in for questioning at the station.

They were invited there to give their statements on the #TangkapNajib demonstration tomorrow.

Former Bersih chairperson Ambiga Sreenevasan, accompanied by her lawyer Latheefa Koya, had also been called to give her statement today regarding remarks she had made in a press conference about the demonstration.

Taken to Petaling police station

The group was about to leave after a press conference outside the Dang Wangi station earlier today when Shukri was suddenly hauled back into the station by a plainclothes officer.

Paulsen ( photo ) said the officer told him the arrest had been made under the Sedition Act and that Shukri would be taken to the Petaling police station.

The officer did not offer any more details although Adam told reporters that it is completely unrelated to the demonstration tomorrow.

The group then headed back in to talk to Dang Wangi OCPD Zainol Samah, but was told that he was not in.

As they were leaving for the second time, more plainclothes officers came and arrested Adam near his car outside, who fell down amid the confusion of the arrest.

"There is no need to do this," Latheefa said to the officers as they bundled Adam into a car headed for the Petaling station.

If they wanted to arrest anyone, the police should be honest instead of lying about it, she said.

Paulsen added that no one will trust the police now as they had resorted to such subterfuge.

Even fewer details were given regarding Adam's arrest.

Crackdown on youth activists

Before he was detained, Adam had insisted that the demonstration will go on tomorrow regardless.

Latheefa said that they were seasoned activists and would not be intimidated by such measures.

Soon after Adam's arrest, Michelle tweeted that police were at Kita Lawan secretariat member Mandeep Singh's ( photo ) office.

"Crackdown on (Demi Malaysia) youth begins now," she said in the tweet.

When contacted, she said the police are gathering in front of the Empower office, which the NGO shares with electoral reform movement Bersih, to arrest Mandeep.

"We are told that the police are there and another lawyer is going there as well," she told Malaysiakini .

However, Mandeep said he would surrender himself to the police at the Petaling Jaya police headquarters this evening.

"I was told there are 10 police personnel waiting outside the Empower office. After discussing with the police and my lawyer, I agree to surrender myself as a good Malaysian citizen who respects the law," he said.

Mandeep said he will be accompanied by Bersih chairperson Maria Chin Abdullah.

Plans to continue with the rally

Yesterday, Demi Malaysia said they will continue with their gathering this Saturday to urge Najib ( photo ) to resign, despite a police warning against the assembly.

Adam, who is the spokesperson for the group, said the warning by Khalid on Wednesday was simply seen as a tactic to stop any show of dissent against the prime minister.

"Until today, the prime minister has failed to answer how 1MDB can pay up their billions of ringgit in debts.

"Realising the need to push, to save the country and free the people from continued economic, political and social uncertainty, the youths are grouping together to demand that Najib resign as prime minister immediately.

"The rally will be held in front of Sogo shopping complex at 2pm," he had said at a press conference held in Kuala Lumpur, expecting some 500 people to join the gathering and urged those attending to come dressed in white.

Bernama on Wednesday reported Khalid ( photo ) as saying that the police would not compromise with any quarters who tried to break the law by inciting the people to take to the streets to topple the government.

He also urged the organiser to immediately deny the matter (topple the government) as it had been spread on social media.

"We have laws and cannot do anything we like to topple the government. There is a constitutional way to change the government... this is my last warning," he said.

He said any rally could be organised in the country but it must follow the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012.
