New voters in the Federal Territories who register for voting eligibility through Umno will be given RM10, said Lembah Pantai Umno division head Raja Nong Chik Zainal Abidin.

Speaking at the Lembah Pantai division annual general meeting today, Raja Nong Chik said that this was part of the party's strategy for the next general election.

"Each new voter (registered through) Umno divisions in the Federal Territories will be paid RM10 each," he said.

Although the election does not need to be held for another three years, Raja Nong Chik said the Lembah Pantai Umno division will do its best to wrest the seat from PKR.

"From our past experience, there are weaknesses in some areas which we overlooked.

"We will use the Puteri wing, assisted by the youth wing, to register new voters," said Raja Nong Chik, who was among four cabinet ministers who failed to win a seat during the 2013 general election.

It is uncertain what mechanism will be used by Umno divisions in the Federal Territories to register voters as the Election Commission (EC) has stopped allowing political parties to register new voters.

Currently, only the EC and the Information Ministry's Department of Special Affairs (Jasa) are allowed to register new voters.

Critics have claimed that the EC's new policy was in response to the fact that opposition parties tend to register more new voters than the ruling party.
