The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has found that the RM2.6 billion traced to Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak's bank accounts were "contributions from a donor" and not from 1MDB.

Fair enough. However, this finding has also raised a slew of questions. Malaysiakini looks at some of them.

What is the scope of MACC's investigations, in relation to Najib?

On July 30, after Najib appointed a new attorney-general, MACC said that its probe is limited to SRC International and not on 1MDB.

What is SRC International?

SRC International was established in 2011 by 1MDB but has been parked under the Finance Ministry since 2012. According to its financial documents, SRC International is involved in the energy industry.

What is SRC International's link with Retirement Fund (Incorporated) (KWAP)?

SRC International secured a loan of RM4 billion from KWAP that was guaranteed by Putrajaya. The loan was disbursed in two tranches in August 2011 and in March 2012.

This deal is still being investigated by MACC.

What was the loan used for?

In March, the Finance Minister's parliamentary written reply said RM3.81 billion was invested in Indonesia, Mongolia and "some other countries", without being specific.

It was later established that part of the money was used to secure a 50 percent equity in Mongolia's Gobi Coal & Energy Ltd. However, the company was said to be only worth US$47.8 million (RM184 million, based on the current exchange rate).

Thus why did the MACC go beyond its scope in declaring that RM2.6 billion was "donations"?

How did the allegation of RM2.6 billion traced to Najib's bank accounts come about?

On July 3, The Wall Street Journal published a report that claimed Malaysian investigators had traced nearly US$700 million deposited in two AmIslamic Bank accounts belonging to Najib.

WSJ said US$681 million was transferred from Tanore Finance, incorporated in the British Virgin Islands, on March 21 and 25, 2013.

Another RM42 million was transferred by Ihsan Perdana Sdn Bhd in February 2015. WSJ said the money orginated from SRC International Sdn Bhd.

Did Najib deny receiving the money?

No. Instead, his immediate reaction was to blame Dr Mahathir Mohamad for working " hand in glove " with foreign nationals to accuse him of taking state-linked funds for personal gain.

Najib said: "Let me be very clear: I have never taken funds for personal gain as alleged by my political opponents – whether from 1MDB, SRC International or other entities, as these companies have confirmed."

Linking Mahathir with foreign conspirators appeared to be a one-off diversion.

Why didn't Najib immediately explain that the money was a donation in response to WSJ?

Why didn't Umno deputy president Muhyiddin Yassin know of this "donation"?

Why do certain Umno leaders claim that it was not used for GE?

Why didn't Najib sue WSJ immediately, instead of seeking clarification and confirmation?

With MACC issuing the statement, as opposed to the special task force on 1MDB, does it mean the task force is no longer active or investigating 1MDB?
