Perkasa chief Ibrahim Ali has withdrawn his appeal in a defamation suit against The Star Publications' group managing editor Wong Chun Wai.

Ibrahim had appealed to the Court of Appeal to reinstate his libel suit against Wong after the Shah Alam High Court ruled that Wong's column criticising Ibrahim was "incapable of conveying any defamatory meaning".

Wong ( photo ) and Star Publication's lawyer Yee Mei Ken confirmed receiving a letter from Ibrahim's legal team on August 5 to withdraw the appeal at no cost, according to a report by The Star .

"Wong is agreeable for withdrawal of the appeal with no order as to costs.

"The deputy registrar has directed Ibrahim's lawyer to file a notice of discontinuation within two weeks. It will be end of the matter," she was quoted as saying.

In January last year, Ibrahim had called for the burning of Malay-language Bible but was not prosecuted on grounds that he was "defending Islam".

In his column in Sunday Star on November 2 last year, Wong criticised Ibrahim on the matter.

Ibrahim subsequently filed a defamation suit on Dec 26 last year, claiming the article implied he was a religious extremist, stupid and has belittled Christianity.

Wong then applied to strike out the suit on the ground that he was stating facts.
