Gerakan Harapan Baru today submitted a memorandum to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong requesting for the setting up of a royal commission of inquiry (RCI) over the RM2.6 billion deposited into the personal bank accounts of Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.

Harapan Baru Youth coordinator Mohd Sany Hamzan ( photo ) led a delegation to Istana Negara this afternoon to submit the memorandum which was received by a palace representative.

According to the memorandum, an RCI on the issue was important as it affected the prime minister's integrity.

This was after the MACC confirmed the deposit but said it was a 'donation' and not from state-owned 1MDB.

Nonetheless, the memorandum pointed out that Section 17 of the MACC Act 2009 does not exclude donations as possible corruption.

The memorandum, signed by Mohd Sany, said an RCI was required to 'restore the rakyat's and the international community's trust so that the economy can recover and the rakyat's anxiety be placated'.

He also proposed former chief justices Salleh Abbas and Abdul Hamid Muhamad to be members of the RCI.

He also urged the sultans to convene a Conference of Malay Rulers meet to discuss the issue and thereafter advise Najib to go on leave.
